Podcast and book recommendations for cancer patients

As we transition into September, we’ve compiled a new list of books and podcasts that explore the emotional and physical experience of a breast cancer diagnosis. Whether you’re looking for strength, hope, or simply a good story, these selections provide valuable insights and heartfelt experiences that will resonate with anyone touched by breast cancer.

Find these titles at your local library, or bookstore, or on the Libby app for a chance to read them for free. If you prefer listening to podcasts, we’ve linked them directly below.

Books:

1. It’s Not About the Hair by Debra Jarvis

In this candid and witty memoir, Debra Jarvis, a cancer survivor and chaplain, shares her story through breast cancer with honesty. She challenges the traditional narrative of cancer as a battle to be fought and instead focuses on the lessons and learnings of the experience. Jarvis’s reflections on identity, faith, and healing offer a fresh perspective on living with cancer and is a fantastic read for anyone seeking comfort and a good laugh.

2. Promise Me by Nancy G. Brinker and Joni Rodgers

“Promise Me” is the inspiring story of how Nancy G. Brinker fulfilled her promise to her sister, Suzy, to end breast cancer. Brinker documents the founding of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, one of the most influential breast cancer organizations, and her efforts to raise awareness, fund research, and provide support for patients. This book is a powerful testament to the impact of one woman’s promise and the movement it created.

3. Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah

Firefly Lane is a fiction novel that intricately explores the lifelong friendship between two women, spanning from middle school into adulthood. As one friend faces a breast cancer diagnosis, Hannah captures the complexities of friendship and connection. This book emphasizes the importance of support and unconditional love, especially during life’s most challenging moments.
