How to manage swelling at home

Elevation is one of the most effective and most underused strategies available. Elevating your legs can be helpful in reducing swelling, particularly if you spend a lot of time on your feet. Whether you’re dealing with generalized edema or the early hand-foot syndrome symptoms associated with certain chemotherapy drugs, consistent elevation can reduce discomfort and prevent fluid from pooling overnight.

Movement matters. Your skeletal muscles help move lymph fluid through the lymphatic system. Even gentle activity keeps that pump working. Ankle pumps and short, light walks are decongestive exercises that can help move lymphatic fluid around your body. These don’t need to be intense, five to ten minutes of slow walking a few times a day is enough to make a difference. Check with your care team before starting any new movement routine, particularly if your treatment affects bone density or balance.

Sodium restriction plays an important role. Limiting sodium in your diet can help your body retain less fluid, which may reduce swelling in your hands and feet.
