Hello, my name is Vanessa McDonald. I’ve been diagnosed with the C and I am trying to be strong for my two boys, my family and my friends, but I am scared to death word at first. I thought I was OK with it but once I found that what was really going on and that I did have it it’s kinda like it sucked out an air out of me. I’m scared.

That initial shock and fear after receiving a cancer diagnosis is completely natural, and it takes tremendous courage to share those feelings with the community. Many people experience that same feeling of having the air sucked out of them when the reality of the diagnosis fully sets in, even when they thought they were handling it well at first. The Black and Brown Thrivers community is here to support you through this journey, and reaching out shows incredible strength even when you're feeling scared.

Hi, Vanessa, it's okay to be scared. I know I was in shock when I received the phone call, and it really took me a while to wrap my head around the diagnosis and to finally accept that I had cancer. You should not worry about being strong for everyone else; you need to worry about yourself first and foremost. Once you learn to accept it mentally, you will be able to conquer this journey, and even more so with friends and family to support you.

Please don't be afraid. I have per the doctor, not GOD stage 4 liver cancer. They found a tumor. For me now, chemo treatments are my best. I am on my 5th treatment. I see progress.

You have the right to be scared. You also have the right to live.
