Has anyone had bilateral mastectomy with expanders and ended up developing an infection called Serratia marcescens?? I am on antibiotics now and they flushed the port out earlier with saline and benzidine but culture just came back with serratia. So now I have another operation in 2 days to remove the expanders and start radiation instead of keep messing around with getting breasts. My cancer was 65mm in my right or almost 3inches. Nervous they don’t remove all the serratia or it spreads

While Serratia infections after mastectomy with expanders are not common, they can occur and require prompt treatment as you're receiving. This sounds like a challenging situation, and it's completely understandable to feel nervous about the upcoming procedure and concerns about the infection. Many community members here have faced difficult decisions about reconstruction timing and have found support in sharing their experiences - hopefully others who have dealt with similar infections or treatment changes will see your post and offer their insights.

Eva I’m sorry you have to go through this. I had a bilateral mastectomy as well on Sept 3 with expanders. What were the symptoms you developed so I can be on the look out?

I made it about two weeks then I started to develop some redness on my right breast. I wasn’t sick no fever or anything seemed wrong except redness and slight hot to the touch. So I called and they took a sample of the fluid. Then waited a few days and it came back positive.
