How do I tell my sons about my cancer progressing?

I have metastatic breast cancer that has spread to my spine. The doctor told me with treatment I have a 20% chance to live 5 more years. I have 2 grown sons that know I have cancer, but I need to talk with them about the progression of the cancer. How have you approached this conversation?

Having honest conversations with grown children about cancer progression takes tremendous courage. Many parents in this community find it helpful to choose a calm moment when everyone can sit together without distractions, and to be direct but gentle about the medical realities while also sharing hopes and plans for making the most of time together. Others here have shared their experiences with similar conversations - hopefully some will offer their perspectives on what approaches felt most natural for their families.
