Has anyone had 5-day partial breast radiation for Stage 1A cancer?

Radiation questions. I have Stage 1A Breast cancer just diagnosed in 11/2025. Completed lumpectomy and now pending radiation treatment. The current recommendation is 5 days of partial breast radiation. Nervous about it though I see others on this site have extended periods of radiation 4-5 weeks. It’s all very stressful though I keep being told I am lucky as it was caught early but it’s still cancer and unsettling. Mixed emotions!

Hi Emily, early diagnosis is a good thing. Sending positive thoughts.

Many community members have shared experiences with partial breast radiation, and it's completely natural to feel nervous about any treatment plan, even when the prognosis is positive. The mixed emotions you're describing are very common - receiving any cancer diagnosis brings uncertainty regardless of the stage. Consider reaching out to your radiation oncology team with specific questions about the 5-day treatment protocol, and know that many others here understand the stress of navigating treatment decisions.

While it's definitely worth discussing your treatment plan with your team, I'd encourage you to also ask specifically about why 5-day partial radiation was chosen for your particular case - sometimes the shorter, more targeted approach can actually be just as effective with fewer side effects.

Agree with discussing short course versus longer course with your MD. I chose the longer course in 2024 because there was not enough data yet on its effectiveness as compared to long course. There may be more now.

I had Stage 1A breast cancer followed by radiation as well. But mine was 4 weeks 5 days a week. So I had 20 treatments. No major side effects s other then the irritated skin. So just 5 treatments sounds great to me!

There are various regimes. I will be getting a 5 day “fast track” version versus 15 day regime. The fast track I am told has been studied for years in Europe and in January at a conference in Europe they presented data that showed 5 day fast track is equal to 15 day regime in terms of 10 year reoccurrence rate. But the paper has not yet been published so it’s not “standard” in usa yet. My doctor had used this fast track protocol if the patients meet certain criteria since Covid. And so has mass general in Boston I am told.

I would look into WBI (whole breast radiation) vs partial. The studies I read gave better outcomes for WBI for dense tissue. My understanding is it is usually 4-8 weeks M-F for radiation. Usually tolerable with sunburned feeling on skin and there are products to help with that. Many factors such as the type and grade of breast cancer, your age, invasive establishment, and risk factors all change this dramatically. (40 yo M.D. student and ER/PR+ DCIS Stage 0 survivor with mastectomy skin/nipple sparing to avoid radiation cause of age- reached out to many colleagues and went against lumpectomy with rad my surgeon wanted and just did mastectomy with recon)

I think there are a lot of variables. I had 25 days where they did collarbone nodes, lumpectomy area and armpit nodes. I think I got more because I’ve had a dbl mastectomy and it’s my 3rd cancer

Just had my first of 5 radiation treatments. My fear definitely outweighed the actual experience. Thankful for all of the great research with breast cancer.

I'm having radiation now. It's going to be a 3 week course. The thing I'm most pissed about is having my breasts exposed to strange men without any thought to the fact that I'm an SA survivor. It's been very traumatic emotionally. I'll never do this again.

That sounds very emotional and painful for you. If you ask, maybe you can get an all female radiation team. Best wishes to you 🙏🏻❤️

I would definitely talk to the staff or one of them or the radiation oncologist about your history.
