Should I get radiation after mastectomy if I'm worried about harm?

I had a mastectomy 17 years ago. There is a tumor in the scar tissue. Last time I did not have radiation. My dr is saying I’m risking it coming back again. The genetic testing and all tests I’ve had so far have me believing the radiation might be more harmful.

Hi Mary Is the tumor you referenced in the scar tissue cancerous or benign? Did you take the 5 year pill after the mastectomy? I know there is so much information regarding treatments and side effects it’s overwhelming.

Making treatment decisions after a recurrence can feel overwhelming, especially when weighing the potential benefits and risks of different options. It's completely understandable to have concerns about radiation therapy and want to carefully consider all aspects of your situation. This kind of decision is deeply personal and involves many factors that only you and your medical team can fully evaluate together. Consider seeking a second opinion from another oncologist or radiation specialist if that would help you feel more confident in your decision-making process.

Hi Emily. Tumor is benign IDC. 17 years ago I had only mastectomy. No other treatment. My surgeon said I would not benefit from anything else. I had genetic testing done. Today I will get results. You can’t imagine how much calmer I am this morning that I’m talking to you. I have not told my husband I have cancer - he has cognitive issues along with recently diagnosed heart and kidney disease. I’ll get you more details tomorrow afternoon. Thank you for listening. So much to take in. I’m a little lost. Have a blessed day.
