How do you cope when breast cancer diagnosis keeps changing after 6 months?

My breast cancer journey began with an annual visit for a mammogram. A cluster of calcifications were found in my right breast A biopsy was done and the pathologist said it was a small DCIS with ER 100% positive. A lumpectomy was done on 6/18. They did not get clear margins, so a 2nd lumpectomy was done on 6/25. Stop no clear margins . At this point I went to Moffitt for a second opinion. After waiting a month the team at Moffitt finally received my tests and slides from both lumpectomy’s and the biopsy Moffitt pathologist said I have LCIS with ER negative So we started over with a mammogram and MRI this week. Now I’m being told I have a spot on my left breast that they want to biopsy. I’m at my wits end it’s been 6 months with literally no answers.

Dealing with changing diagnoses and unclear results over months can feel overwhelming and exhausting. Many people in this community have faced similar challenges with pathology results that don't align between different medical centers, and the uncertainty can be one of the hardest parts of the cancer journey. Having a trusted medical team that communicates clearly about next steps, even when answers aren't immediately available, can help provide some stability during this difficult time.

Just put one foot in front of the other, one step at a time. Stick with Moffitt. They have an excellent reputation. Concentrate on just the next step. Do not think too far ahead. Take someone you trust with you to the next appointment. Thinking of you and praying for you.

Susan I am 4.5 months in with no treatment yet. Chemo port for 4.5wks. had a 2nd and 3rd biopsy of two newly located suspicious areas. 1 on left one on right. Bruised up really bad on the right, new hard lump on the left. Apparently 0 cancer in the right but 2 dif cancers in the left. I only even know that cuz I called in a frenzy the other day and demanded someone give me answers no more tests and Biopsies and scans without answers and a plan and SOMETHING more! I finally meet with oncologist surgeon and nurse practitioner all at once, in 4 days. It's frustrating waiting and letting our minds play trucks and take us to the darkest places. I lost it at 4 months, you're so brave! Hopefully that MRI doesn't lead to any additional testing and you can get your answers and next steps for treatment asap!! You deserve that!!

I thought that too Dona, and I initially tried and then my primary said I didn't have time to search for a new one, I should stick with the oncologist I have. Today the NP called and asked how come the oncologist hasn't started my chemo yet. Unfortunately my insurance doesn't get me into the City of Hope center. I hope Susan is getting answers and treatment now!
