How long does recovery really take after lumpectomy without a drain?

Surgeon says she won't put a drain in after lumpectomy, and axillary sentinal node removal. Says " arm and breast will swell up alot, up to a week" and " It's 2 weeks total to recover from surgery." I'm 64 years old, diagnosed on 9/18/25 with left breast ER+/Her2-, DCIS, IDC stage 1, Grade 1, < 1 cm, <5 Ki-67. Please let me know your experiences with or without a drain after lumpectomy/sentinel node removal. AND 2 weeks to full recovery sounds like an underestimate to me. Is it? When do stitches/glue/whatever come out/dissolve fully, and insicion is fully healed? I'm very physical at work. Want to plan time off accordingly!! Thank you!

Recovery timelines can vary significantly from person to person, and it's completely understandable to want to plan your time off work carefully, especially with a physical job. Many community members have shared that while initial healing might occur within a couple of weeks, returning to full physical activity often takes longer. The healing process for incisions, whether stitches or surgical glue, typically ranges from one to three weeks depending on the method used and individual healing factors. Swelling and mobility improvements can extend beyond the initial recovery period, particularly after sentinel node removal. Consider discussing your specific work demands with your surgical team to get personalized guidance about when it's safe to resume various activities - they'll have the best insight into your particular situation and healing progress.

I had a lumpectomy for dcis, <1 cm, no sentinel node removal, no drain. I went back to a sedentary job in 3 days. I think the incision was healed in about 2 weeks, tapes came off then. The area was tender for months though.

I was told 2 weeks at most after surgery but some women go back to work within days.

I had lumpectomy with 3 lymph nodes removed a had a Jackson Pratt drain for 9 days I highly recommend it . I had no swelling . I also highly recommend doing the arm exercises given to prevent stiffness and lymphedema. My surgery was 9/16/2025 did well . Started radiation 10/23/2025. Glad to say I am doing well best of luck 💕

I had lumpectomy with sentinel biopsy. My incisions were covered with steristrips and I believe the strips fell off in about 10 days. Now doing radiation treatments. No real issues at all.

Try old fashion castor oil helps with swelling. Make sure to get from health food store

I had 15 lymph nodes removed and afterwards they did a new surgical procedure called LYMPHA. They basically stitch your severed lymph canals into the veins for drainage. I never got any swelling or lymphedema because of it. When I had it done a few years ago, they only offered this procedure in Indiana and Texas. Find out if they do it near you, or travel if you can. Totally worth it!!!
