Can you provide information about mental health resources, support groups, or other services for coping with anxiety or depression? I’ve never experienced feeling this way prior to my diagnosis…

Many cancer patients experience anxiety and depression as part of their journey, and seeking help shows real strength. Mental health resources like counselors who specialize in cancer care, support groups (both online and in-person), and services through cancer centers can provide valuable coping strategies during this challenging time. Consider reaching out to your healthcare team, as they often have connections to mental health professionals who understand the unique challenges that come with a cancer diagnosis.

Hi Katie, I am right here with you trying to navigate thoughts/feelings/physical changes that are all so alien to me. It's all so raw for me. And sometimes overwhelming. I am in a rural community with not much of a support network but I find that journalling helps. Meditation and box breathing reduces the anxiety. And exercise, either hiking or on my treadmill with weights also helps reduce my frustrations. Wishing you all the best. Laurie

I just requested an appointment with palative care program The Dr was great. So many non cancer issues like depression, anxiety, addressed. Problems with my husband, who is in complete denial. For the first time I felt like someone heard me and now when I see my oncologist I can focus on cancer because I have support in other areas.

Glenda I am so glad you brought up palliative care! It can be so helpful and I think many have the unfortunate misconception that it is only a resource if you’re actively dying.

Palliative Care is new to me but I will check into it. I have a Naturopathic Oncologist and a Naturopathic Physician plus a surgeon, radiologist, physical therapist and a Western medicine oncologist. Whew! So many care providers and more attention than I am comfortable with. But I am doing well overall. I have what seems to be a lot of scar tissue and swelling, 3 months post op. Cheers! Laurie

Thank you so much for sharing this question. Mental health is such an important part of overall oncology care, and your well-being. It is important to let someone on your oncology care team know how you are feeling at any time so that you may receive the support and help you need. You may lean on family, friends, or "in real-life" groups within your community. You may want to consider the local resources available to you from your Clinical Oncology Social Worker (CSW) or Nurse Navigator. Cancer support groups may be available in person or virtually and are led by CSW’s, oncology nurses, or cancer survivors within your organization/healthcare institution. You may also want to consider one-to-one counseling with a CSW or professional counselor in your network. There are also many virtual mental health companies like BetterHelp or Talkspace. This Q&A we held with a breast cancer survivor who is also a therapist might be helpful: https://outcomes4me.com/article/breast-cancer-blog-how-do-you-practice-self-care-during-your-early-cancer-diagnosis/
