How to reduce breast swelling after radiation therapy?

I finished radiation without any issues at all. A few days later, I was so fatigued I slept one night and the entire next day. My breast grew significantly. The Radiologist said this is normal. If you have experienced this, how did you address alleviating the swelling?

Breast swelling after radiation is indeed a common side effect that many patients experience, and it's encouraging that your radiologist confirmed this is part of the normal healing process. Many community members have found gentle massage, wearing supportive but not tight-fitting bras, and applying cool compresses helpful for managing post-radiation swelling, though it's always best to check with your care team about what approaches are right for your specific situation. Have others in the community found particular techniques that provided comfort during this phase of recovery?

How many treatments did you have? I’m scheduling with an oncology radiologist now that I’m post surgery for DCIS with wide clear margins and no hormone receptor positive.

I was given 3 different diagnosis from 3 different hospitals. I had 2 lumpectomies, DCIS,clear lymph nodes in and radiation. Nothing after that. I hesitate to list the 3 oncologists and the hospitals, until my next appointment in January for MRI and Mammogram, scheduled for once a year. No metastasis, very early. I’m 75, diagnosed in 2023. I am feeling like it’s time for me to bring my concerns forward. Possibly because I’m old and an early diagnosis, they don’t consider me to be of concern. I will speak to all 3 ophthalmologists and ask for their diagnoses once again. I’m waiting til after the holidays. I have other health issues and can’t deal with them all at the same time. Thanks, I have no support as I am in a new town. I wish you all the best. ❤️ Susan Carrabelle, Fl

Lymphedema can show up as breast swelling not just arm swelling. Be sure you get the swelling checked out by a doctor. Radiation is cumulative, so it’s normal to feel more effects at the end. Best wishes.
