Is scalp breakout and itching during chemo normal?

Hair was falling out so just had it buzzed off, but scalp was breaking out at the back and itchy even prior to getting hair buzzed off. What is good for this? I think it’s from scalp being hot and I sweat when I sleep. Getting cool pillow and satin pillow case. Hope that helps. I may need to see Dermatologist. Just wondering if this is normal.

Scalp irritation and breakouts during chemotherapy are quite common experiences that many people going through treatment face. The changes happening to hair follicles, combined with increased sensitivity and the sweating you mentioned, can definitely contribute to these uncomfortable symptoms. Your instincts about the cool pillow and satin pillowcase sound like thoughtful steps to help manage the heat and friction, and consulting with a dermatologist could provide valuable guidance tailored to your specific situation.

I had very thick hair, and at chemo treatment I would use a cooling cap this was in freezer for several days. After 3 rounds of chemo I noticed it was falling like snow. I hated the clean up plus I didn’t want to give anyone a plate of food for fear a piece of hair would be in it. So this morning I shaved it the best I could ( not bald) but good enough no more hair floating. Yes before I did this I also felt a pimple like on my scalp was getting concerned and glad I cut it off. I do feel cleaner. The cancer center gives them away to patients receiving chemo. I feel better knowing this is a side effect of chemo.

What helped my scalp was Dermavitality Scalp Cream. My hair was long, and prior to treatment I had it cut to chin length. Two weeks after my first red devil, it was coming out in huge clumps. I asked my husband to buzz it off. I hated feeling it and seeing it shed! I developed what looked like cradle cap and a few pimple like bumps. That cream cleared everything almost immediately and was super soothing. I had my last Taxol infusion two weeks ago and I am still using it. Someone recommended it to me and I thought it was too expensive, but I wish I would have used it as soon as I shaved my head.

I went to Dermatologist and she thought I had two things going on, follicles were irritated and Keytruda causing white pustule rash. Prescribed Clindamycin solution to put on twice a day and Selsun Blue shampoo a couple times a week. Then I use Dermavitality Scalp cream. The rash from what she thought was Keytruda is gone, but still have a little rash from follicles. No itching though and it’s all 90% better in 3 days. It was worth the trip.

My dermatologist prescribed Ketoconazole shampoo 2%. I use it once a week. Check with your health care team to see if this might work for you too.
