Recovery experiences after mastectomy and lymph node removal can vary significantly from person to person, and the challenges with arm mobility and chest tightness that are described here are concerns that many in this community have shared. Physical therapy and gentle exercises often help with these issues over time, though it's important to discuss specific symptoms and recovery expectations with the medical team who can provide personalized guidance based on individual circumstances.

I completely agree that recovery varies so much for each of us, and you might also want to ask your team about lymphatic drainage massage which some find really helpful for that tightness and mobility.

I went to a physical therapist and he stated myself on exercises and light band work. I am almost 10 years out. I still do this every morning after I get ready. I have full range of motion. If I do not do PT work it will start tightening under my arm quickly.

I have the same problem with my left side. Arm has no strength even though I am doing exercises. Can’t comb my hair properly and numb under my arm to my elbow. I still have food issues It’s been going on for two years.

yes, I had surgery bi- lateral mastectomy. They removed two lymph nodes on each side on my left side, cannot lift my arm. This was done December 3. I’m very sore still sore. The doctor tells me to try to exercise my arm.

Nefie It is too soon for you to be trying to lift your arm completely. You will regain mobility….I had surgery in late August. Once my incision was healed I started Occupational Therapy. My range of motion has improved significantly over that time. Be patience with yourself… I had to learn to do that also.
