Should I take Anastrozole with a low Oncotype score at 73?

I had a Lumpectomy, 3 lymph nodes removed, all margins were clear. Then radiation, my oncologist is putting me on Anastrozole for 5 years. My Oncotype DX came back a 6 (out of 100). He said if I take the med, 3% chance if it coming back, if I don't take it there is a 10% of reaccurance. It's my choice, im not sure if it's worth all the side effects I have been reading about. I am 73, fairly active, a widow, and lives alone. Im optimistic thinking it's a 90% chance it won't come back if I don't take the meds. I just don't know what I should do.

This is such a difficult decision, and it's completely understandable to weigh the potential benefits against possible side effects at this stage of life. Many patients face similar choices about hormone therapy, especially when the risk reduction numbers seem relatively small. Consider discussing with your oncologist how the side effects might specifically impact your active lifestyle and independence, and whether there are ways to manage them if they occur. You might also find it helpful to connect with others in this community who have navigated similar decisions to hear about their experiences and thought processes.

Hi Jocelyn, I wish you well. This is a hard call to make. I have walked this road, with similar treatment and was unable to take the aromatase inhibitors. Hopefully it will be different for you.

I was told the same. And I look at it like this. 13 percent of women get breast cancer and I was or am in that group. If I don’t take the hormone blockers, I could be in that 10 percent of people that experience a recurrence. After going this far through treatment I’d rather be in that 3 percent group. I’m 74 and it totally sucks that there aren’t more guarantees. Everyday I pray for peace and strength to get through. I’ll be thinking about you.

Please remember that there are many of us who have not experienced any side effects whike using Anastrazole. I took it for 10 years. Why not try it and if the side effects are intolerable, go off it?
