Does Medicare cover plastic surgery for breast asymmetry after cancer?

I had a lumpectomy in 2002 for a 1.75 centimeter tumor in my left breast, followed by chemotherapy and radiation. During the first surgery, the tumor’s margins were’t clear. So I had a second surgery to address this. The degree of removed tissue resulted in my left breast being significantly smaller than my right one. I’m considering plastic surgery (fat transfer) to achieve symmetry. Will my Medicare Advantage Plan cover the costs involved? Thank you. Angie R.

The Women's Care Act of 1998 outlined what insurance has to cover. And what you are describing falls into that act.

Medicare Advantage plans often cover reconstructive surgery following cancer treatment, including procedures to address breast asymmetry that resulted from medically necessary cancer surgery. It's worth contacting your plan directly to understand your specific coverage and any prior authorization requirements, as policies can vary between plans and the definition of "medically necessary" may differ.
