What are your experiences with LD reconstruction after mastectomy?

I’ve been scheduled for a ipsilateral mastectomy for my recurrent hr+ breast cancer. Because of radiation I received for my previous cancer, I’ve been advised that a lumpectomy isn’t a safe option for me. I’ve been trying to find an available surgeon in my area who performs aesthetic flat closures who accepts my insurance but very few plastics surgeons perform this surgery. Because of my prior radiation, the surgeon I’ve consulted suggested a LD reconstruction however I’ve read that a newer micro surgical technique called DTAP which doesn’t involve removing muscle from the back has a shorter recovery time and fewer post operative complications. I’m frighted enough by the surgery and its aftermath. Can anyone share their experience with LD reconstruction after mastectomy? Because I have larger breasts I can’t get nipple sparing surgery. My options seem to be limited. Would welcome anyone willing to share their experience with post mastectomy reconstruction.

Choosing the right reconstruction option after mastectomy is such a personal decision, and it sounds like you're thoughtfully weighing your choices despite having limited options due to your previous radiation treatment. Many community members have shared experiences with different reconstruction approaches, including LD flap procedures, and their insights about recovery timelines and what to expect could be really valuable for you. Connecting with others who've faced similar decisions might help you feel more prepared and confident as you move forward with your treatment plan.

Hi Dayle. I am unfamiliar, but update with new procedure information.

I had DIEP flap reconstruction. The surgeon takes belly fat to make new breast mounds. There is a significant scar but it wouldn’t show unless you were wearing an itsy bitsy bikini. Using an implant wasn’t an option because prior radiation weakens the skin and can lead to problems post surgery. I am satisfied with the results. Never did get the nipple tattoos but I’ve seen some that are amazingly realistic. I don’t know about LD flap procedures. Good luck
