Lump in Armpit After Mastectomy: Is This Normal?

Hi, I had a sential node biopsy done late May, and it went fine. I just had my dbl mastectomy on June 20. I’m starting to feel a small lump in my left armpit where the biopsy was done weeks ago. Is this normal? I did just reach out to my doctor and waiting on a callback.

It's completely understandable to feel concerned about any new changes after surgery, and reaching out to your doctor was absolutely the right step. Post-surgical swelling, scar tissue formation, or other healing-related changes can sometimes occur in the weeks following procedures, but only your medical team can properly evaluate what you're experiencing. Hopefully you'll hear back from them soon and get the reassurance and answers you need during your recovery.

Is the lump along the line of the scar? If so it is probably perfectly normal. Even if it isn’t, it is probably still just some weird swelling. Good to ask them but guessing it is just fine. Hope you are recovering well from surgery. I had mine on May 22nd and I am really completely healed. You are on your way!

I have a tiny lump in my scar area of my lumpectomy - has me going from scared one minute to it’s nothing the next as I had 20 radiations - time will tell

Thanks Terri and Carole! It has seemed to go down as the day went on. I changed my bra and did some exercises. Thinking it was just that fluid build up and needed some help to move around. My doctor said the same, if the lump was there consistently for a week she will have me come in.

Oh good! Fluid build up definitely makes sense. After my double mastectomy I had a little fluid and putting the compression bra back on (after I was told I could stop wearing it) always helped. As well as doing arm exercises.

Part of the healing process includes skin changes and yes, a hardness or lumpiness and aching to the incision. The armpit is a very sensitive area. Have your surgeon assess the area. My surgical area had these changes before completely healing. 🙏
