I am four weeks post bilateral mastectomy. Stage 0 DCIS in right breast and Stage 1 invasive ductal carcinoma in left breast. Sentinal Node biopsy came back benign. My breast surgeon and oncologist suggested taking tamoxifen. Any one here who can provide support and advice?

This sounds like a really positive outcome with early-stage findings and clear lymph nodes. The decision about tamoxifen is an important one that many people in this community have faced, and it's great that you're reaching out for support and perspectives from others who understand this journey. Consider asking your medical team about the specific benefits and potential side effects in your situation, and know that many community members here have navigated similar decisions and may be able to share their experiences with you.

I had similar, L breast caught early, radiation only just a lumpectomy. Tamoxifen was suggested, but an associate who had taken it developed ovarian after. After reviewing medications available I chose Exemestane and my Onco approved. Not the best, get fatigued, cant lose weight and have Zometa infusion every 6 mo's to keep bones strong. Some people can tolerate tamoxifen and some cant. do dome research and see what makes u comfortable & discuss w/ur onco. Keep in mind severity of the cancer u had... Hope this helped. Good Luck.

Hello Sarah I can relate to both yours and Pauline I too had DCIS in Left Stage 0-1 had lumpectomy followed by 20 rounds of radiation mine contained in milk duct like Pauline said it depends on how severe your cancer is I agree to do your research and listen to your body Doctors don’t always know the best Parodical is always what the doctor does, it’s hard to navigate so research ask questions and listen to your body and gut. Advocate for yourself I don’t know your faith walk but pray on it and over it. I opt out on Tamoxifen due to the list of side effects, I also had a total hysterectomy 6 weeks ago as a preventative. My oncologist put me on a low dose of Anastrozole but 3 weeks into taking it I couldn’t handle the side effects bone and joint pain had me in tears so I’m sure when I see my oncologist he’ll try to push another pill Sometimes I wonder if this is over treated and question if taking an AI is necessary then I fear if I don’t take one will it come back? My doctor installed fear in me and I just don’t know anymore I definitely don’t want to go through this again! Hopefully I helped..God bless you on your journey

Have you asked doctor about absolute risk v relative risk as it relates to taking the hormone therapy? That may give you a better idea of whether you want to continue or not.
