a year agoI have Stage 1b breast cancer.Had lumpectomy. One lymph node of three removed had cancer. Pet scan showed no cancer has spread. I have bad degeneration in hip and back. Hip is very painful with limited movement. If I have scheduled hip replacement surgery in a few weeks, I would have to wait 4-5 weeks for radiation? Is waiting on radiation a concern?

This is definitely a complex timing decision that many patients face when dealing with multiple health concerns. The balance between managing cancer treatment and quality of life issues like severe hip pain requires careful coordination between your oncology and orthopedic teams. Both your oncologist and surgeon will need to weigh factors specific to your case, including your cancer characteristics and overall health status, to determine the safest timing approach. Have others in the community faced similar decisions about coordinating cancer treatment with other necessary surgeries?

6 months agoLinda, I had 1 lymph node with minute cancer in 2002. I had radiation and chemo at the same time. That gave me 15 years cancer free. In 2016, I was diagnosed with MBC. It's in my lymph nodes and most of my bones. It's not below my elbows or knees. My pelvis and femur hurt when I walk a short distance. This is my journey. I think I would have the radiation before the hip replacement. Trust your instincts and do what you feel is best for your quality of life.

6 months agoKelly B, when I started my journey in 2002 with invasive ductal BC stg IIb. I had surgery, radiation and chemo. I had minute cancer in a sentinel nodes. I completed 5 years AI treatment. I had a naive idea that after 5 years I was cured. I had mammograms every year. In Jan 2016, I was diagnosed with MBC in my bones and lymph nodes. It is not detected by mammogram. I, also, have several friends that BC reoccurred in the same breast or other breast. They had chemo twice depending on their stage. I've been on Hormone therapy for over 8 years. When that treatment stops working, I'll start chemo, again. I love my life and will continue to fight, hopefully until they find a cure.
