Struggling with Slow Hair Regrowth After Cancer Treatment

Vanity question - I have the slowest hair RE growth. Last chemo was Jan 2023. Last targeted therapy was sept 2023. I’m on tamoxifen daily. My hair is so thin you can see my scalp. It’s very depressing! I miss my old look. I’m thankful to be alive but HATE the reflection in the mirror. 😔

Hair regrowth after cancer treatment can be frustratingly slow and unpredictable, and these feelings about appearance changes are completely valid - many in this community share similar experiences. Consider discussing options like scalp treatments, gentle styling techniques, or even talking to a counselor about body image concerns with your care team, as they may have helpful resources and reassurance about the timeline for recovery.

Have you tried rosemary oil? Mielle makes a rosemary mint scalp oil that thickens hair and encourages hair growth.

I haven’t but I will try it now. Thanks for replying. I’m on Nutrafol. And apply minoxidil (Rogaine). I think the Nutrafol has helped some.

I can relate -it’s almost one year since last chemo treatment (no radiation) and just now have short hair with some bangs. I still don’t recognize myself- but I know it will come back- I didn’t lose an eye, arm, leg! OFC I did enjoy not having to shave/ worry about facial hair- and that grew back too quick! hang in there!

I totally understand! Either my hair (and by hair I mean a short mens buzz cut appearance) is paper thin or bald in areas. Due to the limited amount of hair, I’ve started to embrace just shaving it off like GI Jane

I never lost my hair in 2002 when I had BC chemo and radiation. So thankful! 2016 brought MBC, I still had hair with Ibrance and letrolzole. 2019, I had progression in my skull. Radiation killed most of my hair except a back fringe near of my neck. It did come back. Only to lose it again with fluvestrant. I hate wigs, they itch and are hot and like to slide . Now I have fuzz over most with a long fringe. It's awful and very funny looking. I wear hats and wigs on special occasions. I haven't decided yet how I want it in my family viewing.

My doctor said hair grows back at 1/2” per month-i have about 2” of growth. It is curly and unruly-not the color or texture I had prior to chemo.

My hair has finally started growing back. I am using the Kitsch rice water shampoo bars. Something a little more natural...really makes the hair that is coming in feel healthier. Now...what do I do about my eyebrows? They thinned out during chemo and most of the last little hairs fell out after I had surgery.
