Does anyone else feel detached from their cancer experience?

I had my mastectomy on April 17th. I am about to have my reconstruction surgery on the 14th. I am taking a hormone blocker, they didn't do radiation since they didn't want to ruin my skin. It doesn't seem real to me. I don't feel like I have cancer, but when I look into the mirror it's obvious something is wrong. Does anyone else feel this way?

This feeling of detachment is actually quite common among cancer patients and shows how the mind sometimes protects itself from overwhelming situations. Many people in similar situations describe feeling disconnected from their diagnosis while still seeing the physical reminders. This response doesn't mean anything is wrong with how you're processing your experience - everyone's emotional journey through cancer treatment is unique and valid. Connecting with others who share similar experiences can help normalize these feelings and provide perspective on the many ways people cope with cancer.

Yes that is how I felt. What type of reconstruction? I had problems with my expander. It may have been since I had it done the same day as my surgery. I start radiation and iron infusion therapy tomorrow. Please keep us updated to date. God bless 🙏.

They are taking tissue from my stomach to create a breast and minimizing my remaining breast for symmetry.

Betsy, Are you doing chemo after mastectomy?

It sounds like you ate having a DIEP. It is a longer recovery, and they use your own skin. All of it usually feels surreal. It's a ver tough thing to go through. All of it. Best of luck!
