12 hours agoI had a lumpectomy for stage 0 breast cancer and haven't started radiation yet. My oncologist mentioned accelerated partial breast irradiation (APBI) as a possible option instead of whole breast radiation. From what I understand, APBI focuses radiation on just the area around where my tumor was removed rather than treating the entire breast, and it's a shorter treatment course. I'd love to hear from others who had similar situations and considered or received APBI for low-risk DCIS. Your experiences would really help as I think through my options. • If you had APBI, what was your experience with the treatment process? • What questions did you find most helpful to ask your radiation oncologist when deciding between APBI and whole breast radiation?

8 hours agoI chose whole breast radiation in the fall of 2024, also for stage 0, intermediate grade. I wanted stats on recurrence or invasive cancer occurrence after each treatment and at that time there wasn’t much data on APBI. I think there is more now.

7 hours agoMany patients with stage 0 breast cancer find themselves weighing similar treatment options after lumpectomy, and it's encouraging that you're taking time to research and ask thoughtful questions. APBI can be an effective option for certain patients with low-risk DCIS, offering the convenience of shorter treatment time while targeting the specific area of concern. Community members who have navigated this decision often share valuable insights about their treatment experiences and the key questions that helped them feel confident in their choice - hopefully some will chime in to share their perspectives with you.
