How do you manage multiple side effects from Femara letrozole?

I'm currently taking Femara (letrozole) for my breast cancer treatment and dealing with joint pain, back pain, constipation, and nausea. I'm experiencing some severe symptoms including back pain, anxiety, and constipation. My oncology team is helping me manage these symptoms, but I'd love to connect with others who have been through similar experiences. I know these symptoms can be common with hormone therapy, but I'm curious about how others have navigated this part of their treatment journey. • What helped you manage multiple side effects while on letrozole or similar hormone therapy? • How did you find balance between symptom management and staying on track with your treatment plan? Would appreciate hearing from anyone who has walked a similar path.

Managing multiple side effects during hormone therapy can feel overwhelming, but many community members have found helpful strategies through trial and error with their healthcare teams. Common approaches include gentle exercise for joint pain, dietary adjustments for digestive issues, and working closely with oncologists to find the right balance of symptom management that allows treatment to continue effectively. Connecting with others who understand this journey can provide valuable insights and emotional support during this challenging time.

I have found that individual side effects come and go. Sometimes time fixes it

I also experience back and joint pain, but have managed it by taking Dollar General Extra Strength Acetimeophein, before the pain sinks in. It's something about this brand that's real good. Also I take Magnesium at night before bed with my Letrozole, and upset stomach I drink a cup of Peppermint tea. Try these it might help

Also, another patient told me her doctor recommended claritin for the joint pain. I do think it helps.

In a word, ugh! Letrozole was the third AI I tried. They all have nasty side effects. We are all different, so some folks may have various levels of tolerance. My oncologist told me to stick with it & allow your body to adjust. I tried and struggled. After 7 months on letrozole I wound up with severe migraines for 6 weeks that I could not shake. So had to discontinue it. Diet & exercise are key. I tried acupuncture with some results but could not afford to keep up the treatments. Oddly enough, the wrists & thumb joint were most painful & I have no arthritis! All the AI meds caused the side effects. Ask your doctors if you may try the Arimidex or Extemestane not sure I spelled correctly. I’ve been experimenting for over two years on these meds. Do the best you can❣️ Sending my best & lots of hugs💜

While on letrozole, I experienced joint pain, constipation, insomnia, and hot flashes. For the joint pain, walking and stretching have helped me a lot! Constipation has been a chronic issue for me because of IBS, and letrozole made it worse. What has helped most is improving my diet and increasing fiber. A big difference for me has been eating kefir daily with chia seeds, flaxseed, blueberries, and other fruit. My husband makes the live kefir (it’s like yogurt) at home, and it’s actually not difficult to do- you can find tutorials on YouTube. Since starting this routine and drinking more water, stopped eating processed foods my constipation has improved enough that I no longer take Linzess. For hot flashes and insomnia, 300mg of gabapentin has helped a bit with hot flashes and the brutal insomnia! Hope this helps others who are dealing with similar side effects.

In April my oncologist told me it was the statin causing my pain issues. I quit that, and Letrozole, on that day. A month later I notice a difference. Going on a business trip next week. I will go back on Letrozole when I return - not the statin - to see how it goes.

If you are able to switch to Tomoxifin do it. Unfortunately I had blood clots from birth control pills and was ineligible. Tomoxifin is actually good for your bones. I recently completed years on Letrozole…what a relief. Bone thinning and every day felt like PMS. Apparently the side effects from Tomoxifin are minimal.

Hello Lisa: You’re not alone! My Letrozole journey began almost six months ago and I’ve been working with physical therapists three of those months. Right now, am waiting for my orthopedic specialist to schedule a replacement surgery! Well, gotta keep a PMA (positive mental attitude) in spite of the never-ending pain!! Still trusting in God to see me through!

I tried all 3 AI inhibitors and have the most tolerable side effects with Exemestane. Only down side is my copay is $25 a month while the other two were $0 copay. Anastrozole gave me severe hot flashes that kept me awake most of the night. Letrozole gave me slightly less hot flashes but had headaches. Exemestane gives hot flashes but I'm getting some reduction in severity and frequency using a supplement of Siberian rhubarb. Veozah is a prescription drug for hot flashes but is hard on your liver. I know some friends taking it but my oncologist doesn't recommend it. The supplement I take is available on Amazon: https://a.co/d/092RP5Sm

Ok. Thanks. I have tried tamoxifen and the others. They either made my migraines worse. Or my joints hurt so bad I couldn't open a bottle of water. I mostly have muscle cramps in either my legs or my feet at night. I do take a muscle relaxer(;tiZANidine). That just helps me go to sleep.
