What's it like having breast-conserving surgery and radiation for DCIS?

I have DCIS (stage 0 breast cancer), and I have surgery scheduled but haven't started treatment yet. I've been learning about breast-conserving surgery followed by whole breast radiation. The surgery removes the cancer while keeping as much healthy breast tissue as possible, and radiation treats the whole breast to lower the chance of cancer cells growing back. I'd love to hear from others with a similar diagnosis or treatment path. - What was your experience with breast-conserving surgery and radiation for DCIS? - What do you wish you had known before you started? Thank you for sharing anything that comes to mind.

Preparing for DCIS treatment can bring up a lot of questions, and asking this community what breast-conserving surgery and radiation are like is a thoughtful way to gather real-life perspectives. Everyone's experience is different, so the care team is the best source for what to expect in your situation, and they can also help you build a list of questions before surgery. Members who have been through DCIS treatment are warmly invited to share their stories and tips here.

Do you have your Oncotype or Mammaprint results? I am stage 2 IDC. I only had a lumpectomy and they were able to get all the margins, so I am comfortable with the decision. My tumor is grade 3 and both Mammaprint and Oncotype came back saying chemo would be helpful, so we added that to my treatment plan. It wasn’t originally part of the plan. Whole breast radiation will start after the chemo in December. The two genomic tests really taught me a lot about my cancer and my treatment options.
