What does rising CEA levels after FOLFOX chemo mean for colon cancer?

I just had my supposedly last FOLFOX chemo treatment... The pump comes off Wednesday morning. However my carcinoembryonic antigen levels continue to rise uncomfortably high ... When the colon cancer was first diagnosed in April, the carcinoembryonic antigen level was 3.4 After surgery for an ileostomy bag, the level was 6.2 in May. After surgery for the cancer and reversal of the ileostomy bag the level was 6.1 Before my first chemo treatment in July it was 5.6 On August 11 it was 12.8 On August 25 it was 14 On September 8 it was 16.9 On today, September 22 it was 19.9 It already had a CT scan with contrast about a week ago which did not show any metastasis in the colon, etc. There were tiny dots on my liver this type of scan couldn't diagnose. tc So I am having a PET scan on Friday ... Brain to thigh. Mary Jane

Rising CEA levels during treatment can understandably cause anxiety, and it's encouraging that the recent CT scan didn't show metastasis and that a PET scan is scheduled to get more detailed information. CEA levels can fluctuate for various reasons during cancer treatment, and oncologists use them alongside imaging and other tests to get the complete picture. The medical team will be able to interpret these results in the context of the overall treatment plan and determine the best next steps based on all available information.

Praying that your PET scan on Friday gives the answers you need to address whatever the issue is! Also Hoping that you have had your last FOLFOX treatment! I’m only on #3 today so I’ve got a way to go, but at least after today I’ll be in single digit “number of treatments” left! My CEA is also being tested today - which hasn’t been tested since June. Nobody had mentioned that test & but when you shared the details of what it shows, I asked my oncologist about it. It was 1.7 at that time. Praying the chemo is working 🙏🏻

That's a fantastic number for cea!! I pray it continues!! My chemo treatments went by quickly... No bad side effects,! Some minor nausea. Some bad diarrhea on and off, especially during the first week of the regimen..need to keep hydrated...Minor hair loss. Especially after I washed it... I switched to Johnson's baby shampoo and a coconut leave-in conditioner., that was much gentler and I used a very wide tooth comb , no brush at all.
