Cancer treatment with one kidney - will chemo affect my kidney function?

I just received my diagnosis as triple positive. I saw the medical oncologist yesterday, 12/26. They are going to start TPHC the week of 01/12. I have lots of concerns but the biggest one is my single kidney. I’m a living donor so I only have one. Anyone here go through (or is going through) treatment with one kidney? How has it affected your before treatment kidney function? I’m so worried that treating the cancer is going to ruin my kidney function.

Having concerns about how cancer treatment might affect kidney function with only one kidney is completely understandable, and it's smart to be thinking ahead about this important aspect of care. Many people in similar situations have navigated cancer treatment successfully, and oncology teams are experienced in adjusting treatment plans to protect kidney function when needed. Consider discussing your specific concerns with your medical team, as they can monitor your kidney function closely throughout treatment and may have valuable insights about managing both your cancer care and kidney health together.

I completely agree that your medical team will be experienced in protecting your kidney function during treatment - you might also ask them about what specific kidney monitoring schedule they'll use so you know exactly what to expect along the way.

TCHP is an aggressive treatment. It's rough

I have only one kidney as long as they do your lab work before chemo to check for EGFR and creatatine levels they told me if it got to 30 they couldn't do chemo that day but would let me IV fluids thru port on that day to try and get my kidney function back up.I had to drink plenty of fluids at home and I liked lemon water and electrolytes drink without much sodium and sugar.

Thank you Mary!!! That makes me feel soooo much better. I’ve completely changed my diet and have really stepped up my water intake. I need to work on exercise. That is a nasty little E word. But I know I need to get more active (:
