Facing a double mastectomy can feel overwhelming, and it's completely natural to have fears about such a major surgery and how it might change things. Many community members have walked this path and found strength they didn't know they had, along with support from others who truly understand what this journey feels like. Consider connecting with others here who have experience with mastectomy and reconstruction - their insights and encouragement could be invaluable as your surgery date approaches.

6 months agoHaydee, What is the stage of your breast cancer? The prognosis for stage 1,2 and 3 is very good if you have a mastectomy. You then need to have chemotherapy or targeted chemotherapy to make sure they killed all the cancer cells including some that are very small. Doctors do not want you to have any reoccurrence of the cancer. I had a mastectomy and DIEP flap reconstruction. I had good results. Your chances of living a long time with your loving family are greater if you follow the doctors suggestions. There are SOME choices that your doctor can outline for you.

6 months agoInsurance covers your reconstruction. I had mastectomy of both breasts May 19.. once I got over initial diagnosis of cancer.. the surgery and chemo have not been as rough as I expected. Get your mind right.. I stay in DEFENSE mode.. this is just a temporary detour to continue enjoying life. Drink lots of water, add tumeric or curry powder to your cooking spices, protein shakes to keep muscle mass..no sugar stay active as you can & don't give up. 🙏🙏🙏

6 months agoDrink water and protein shakes. Protein will help with muscle pain because it helps to not lose your muscle mass. I use vanilla protein shakes in place of milk. I put it in my coffee,on cerea, oatmeal and with ice cream. Stay positive..don't focus on the unknown and get consumed by the what ifs.. embrace the change of conquering the battle. It's like being scared to try a new hairstyle.. you adjust and learn a new way. Best of luck..
