Metallic taste is a common side effect that many people experience during chemotherapy treatments, and there are several strategies that community members have found helpful. Some people find relief by using plastic utensils instead of metal ones, trying citrus flavors or mints, rinsing with baking soda and water, or eating cold foods which can be more tolerable. Others in the community may have additional suggestions that worked for them during similar treatments, so hopefully you'll get some helpful tips from fellow members who understand what you're going through.

I had problems eating and it worsened with each infusion. My doctor removed Taxotere for my last 2 infusions and that helped. Before that, I found that strongly flavored condiments like mustard and soy helped. I ate a lot of dumplings with soy!

Remove Toxotere did affect your treatment plan?

Well, all my tumors were wiped out by the chemo. I probably would have refused if it had been earlier in the chemo regimen for fear of it diluting the treatment but I lost 14 lbs in 9 days after the 4th one so I had to have some relief

Hang in there!!! I had the metallic taste as well. Eating fruit helped. But at no point did I want them to change my treatment plan. I can handle a few bad days regarding taste because the outcome is far better if you can just hang in there.

I am really trying but it’s getting worst. I agree with you I don’t want to change my treatment plan. But I am worried of losing weight which I was told is not good. I can only tolerate smoothies. I have long way to go until my my last infusion in July.

I know this is gonna sound crazy Ladies but star anise increases appetite. A good cup of chia tea may help some. I had trouble with food before we found the cancer and drinks with this beautiful friend, who has helped greatly. I am waiting for the first appointment with the surgeon for a double.

Ida nettle tea is high in nutrition. Can you drink? I know at times that is all I can do is drink. Brewing herbal tea strong might overpower the taste the medicine causes. I haven't made it to this point, so I do not know how intense it can get. I hope you find a way to stay healthy

I have been having high calorie smoothies, mashed potatoes, and bean soup. It’s awful not be able to enjoy food!

Ice cream and tomato soup with milk. That is all I recall.

My oncologist suggested that my metallic taste is partly coming from acid reflux and prescribed a medication. I took the medication and still can’t kick the metallic taste.

Chewing gum seemed to help. You just have to force yourself to keep hydrated

I use a baking soda/salt mouth rinse and also Biotene to help with the taste issues. Chicken soup and pastas are my staples during the first week after TCHP. Also ice cream. I have one treatment left to go and am sooooo ready for this phase to be done!

Unfortunately I lost 69 lbs in 4 months, 14 of them in the 9 days after my 4th infusion. I literally ate no more than a mouthful or 2 a day during that period. My doctors started talking about a feeding tube. Removing the Taxotere allowed me to finish the chemo and start eating again.

Melody B - how do you use the Biotene? I tried to baking soda/salt but did nothing for the metallic taste. My oncologist prescribed meds for acid reflux and also to use Tum Tums.

Ida—I squirt a small amount of the Biotene mouth rinse in a cup and then swish it in my mouth for 15-20 seconds and spit out. It gives me a mint aftertaste which is more tolerable.

SC - Yes I can eat ice cream well. But I need more nutrition in my diet.

Melody B - Do you use Biotene before you eat solid foods?

I only use Biotene when I need to get that awful taste/feeling out of my mouth. Watermelon is also my new favorite—I eat a couple chunks several times a day to help with hydration and some calories.
