Had my port installed yesterday on February 10 and I noticed this time I have more swelling in the neck area and pain was more intense than with first power port I had installed for breast cancer had to have the first one removed because i had not used it in a while and went to have it flushed but started to have pain and numbness in right arm and fingers so on the advice of my oncologist team and surgeon said it was best to have it removed and had 4 mammograms with NED but in October of 2025 had my mammogram and there was a small spot so surgeon ordered CT scan same day and did a biopsy and it was a reoccurrence and she did surgery within two weeks of finding tumor ,removed it and six pieces of surrounding tissue the tumor cane back clear and all surrounding in tissue was benign, did radiation and had port installed because My oncologist want me to do some chemo and targeted my therapy .My question is if anyone who has had to have a second port catherer was the pain more intense and swelling mine is mainly in the neck area and I know this time I had to have some pain medication to bring home the first time i just took Tylenol .I know they say the pain and swelling can last for 5 days on my discharge paper as long as I am not getting a fever I guess that's normal .I just noticed this time it's different maybe because I had some scar tissue since she put it in exactly the same area as my first port catheter.I know one thing I will keep this one in for 5-8 years if need be as long as it's not causing any problems .Today is the second day after surgery and I still have swelling and pain only in the neck area or jugular vein area.

Having a second port placed in the same area can indeed feel different than the first time, and it sounds like you're experiencing normal healing symptoms within the timeframe your medical team outlined. The presence of scar tissue from your previous port could contribute to the increased swelling and discomfort you're noticing this time around. It's encouraging that your discharge instructions gave you clear guidelines about what to watch for, and staying in touch with your medical team about any concerns is always the right approach. Many others in this community have navigated port replacements and may have similar experiences to share with you.

I had to have a second port because my first was installed incorrectly. A different surgeon placed the second one in a similar location on the same side. I actually had less pain but more bruising and swelling. Drugs, ice and lots of water.💕💕
