Single Node Sentinel Biopsy: Cause for Concern?

Has anyone here who has had a sentinel node biopsy, resulted in their surgeon only getting one node? The one node had a micromet without extension, however I’m worried because we found out in the pathology report the biopsy resulted in only the removal of one lymph node. If they got 3 or 4 and the rest were negative, I’d feel better. I did do radiation but still worries me.

It's completely understandable to have concerns about the number of sentinel nodes removed during biopsy. Many patients share similar worries, and this is a common topic in cancer communities. The quality of the sentinel node biopsy depends on various factors that only the surgical team can fully assess, so discussing these specific concerns with the oncologist or surgeon would provide the most reassurance about the adequacy of the procedure and next steps.

They only took one node from me as well. She thought she got another one but it was just breast tissue. My lymph node was negative but was always worried that they didn't test more nodes.

IDBreast cancer Triple positive One axillary node surgeon took all the rest (18) which were negative. I was not too happy about that, now experiencing mild lymph edema of side of body, total mastectomy of right breast. Have completed 6 Neo adjuvant cycles of chemo, 25 radiation shots (5000) to shoulder/ chest Axillary affected side AND. Finishing up 17 treatments for HER2 positive treatment. So… all this for 95% cure 5 years maybe. No evidence of disease today. No hard stats for 10 year survival. I waited at least 5 months before completing radiation I was not convinced of efficacy but survival data shows better survival 20% with radiation. Requested pathology to be present at mastectomy to gain good margins and decrease possibility of redo to gain better margin later. Anyhow advocate for yourself as you go… good luck!

Don’t worry! Remember that before surgery you get an injection with a dye and during the surgery the doctor will check your sentinel nodes. My doctor took 2 and they went to the lab and came negative. Usually, your surgeon can take between one, two, or three. Remember the job of the nods, why take more if by taking one the surgeon has the answer!

8 removed for me one positive. I worried about what if ones beyond it are positive but they told me that’s what the radiation is for!

I had the sentinel node biopsy...only one node. It was negative. I was hr+ her 2 negative and node negative. I take Letrozole. Lots of bone pain, muscle pain and fatigue. I've been on it for two years. Good luck to you.

They took the Sentinel lymph node, and it was negative. I still had radiation and nine years after that I ended up with metastatic breast cancer to my bones.

One year ago I had lobular cancer singlemx. She took 29 of 33 lymph nodes. I’ve had oral chemo and radiation. So far so good except for the various side effects of the so-called cure! Still on Ibrance and letrozole.

2 nodes removed frozen came back neg so surgeon didn't take more. When they stained the nodes they came back positive and margins were not clear. Radiation, 6 months Xeloda and now on anastrozole.

2 nodes removed both positive with clear margins. I asked if they were going to take more. Onco said “no, that’s what radiation is for.” I don’t think I will ever stop wondering if others were positive. 30 rounds of radiation and start anastrozole next week.

I’m getting ready to start radiation had my surveillance scan just waiting for the plan my oncologist said they are trying a higher dose of radiation and less visits so idk

Think the plan is 16 doses for me but they won’t say for sure until after they review the surveillance scan

Focus on your treatment plan and follow-up plan. Ask your oncologist to explain how they are going to make sure any other sneaky cells are going to be treated and monitored. Remember, micromets are often dormant and do not respond to chemotherapy. They also don't show up in scans. They are too small.

My surgeon removed 2 lymph nodes. Both negative, but my cancer was caught really early and was very small.

I only had the sentinel node pulled; but it was negative. I too did radiation only.

My surgeon thought he only took one but there was actually 2. Both were positive. I asked if they were going to go back and take more but I was told that’s what radiation is for. I will worry about it for the rest of my life I think.
