Hello everyone! I have a question: can chemotherapy or radiation therapy cause cataract? My mother had chemotherapy and 21 rounds of radiation. Now few months after treatment, both eyes diagnosed with cataract and need surgery. What do you think about this?

Cancer treatments, including chemotherapy and radiation therapy, can sometimes lead to cataracts as a side effect, so this timing isn't uncommon. Many people in this community have faced similar challenges after treatment, and it's encouraging that cataract surgery is generally very successful at restoring vision - sharing experiences here might help connect with others who've been through something similar.

I would ask Dr. was she on Tamoxifen? That is a known side effect of that. I’m on it now and my eyes area getting worse. It’s fine though, we will all get cataracts wouldn’t mind having the surgery younger than older. If she is older they may have been developing anyway. My eye Dr always said I was where I was supposed to be for them, sadly just another thing about getting old

I have already had cataract surgery. However I have been on tamoxifen since beginning of October and have a definite change in vision

Just read this …. The breast cancer medication most commonly identified with ocular side effects is tamoxifen. However, chemotherapy agents, such as 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), can also have ocular side effects.
