Has Anyone Overcome Sleep Problems from Aromatase Inhibitors?

I have been taking Letrozole for 4 months. Thankfully the only side effect that I experience and can’t solve is insomnia. Gaba (OTC supplement) helps me fall asleep, but the only way I can stay asleep is to take Aleve PM. I am apprehensive about the long-term side effects, like short-term memory impairment, of taking Aleve PM. Has anyone conquered sleep disruption caused my AIs? Thanks.

Sleep issues with aromatase inhibitors are a common challenge that many in this community have faced, and there are various strategies that have helped others find relief beyond over-the-counter sleep aids. Consider discussing your concerns about long-term Aleve PM use with your oncology team, as they may have suggestions for safer sleep solutions or can refer you to specialists who understand how cancer treatments affect sleep patterns.

Gaba can be a good ,helpful drug during cancer treatment. Try to use Unisom or just benadryl. Neither are usually addictive. Alleve everyday might eventually upset your stomach. Walmart has their own brand of unisom, much cheaper. Take these type of things after your bedtime shower, maybe an hour before bed. Melatonin can be helpful. You can also get a medical cannabis card. However you can order Lumi gummies from Oregon in the mail. They have ones for sleep. Reputable product. You can email them and they will help explain you states laws.

Make sure you don't drive for at least 8 to 10 hours after using these products. You have to see how you react to their use

Insomnia was the biggest issue I had with anastrozole. It was very bad. I tried all kinds of sleep aids. The only thing that helped me was to reduce my dose and slowly build up. After 6 months my sleep improved significantly and I think it was just an adjustment. I was feeling hopeless for a while there but now I sleep relatively well! Might wake a few times but typically can fall back asleep. Before I was up all night.

Thank you so much. It helps so much to know I am not alone in this.

Hi Paige, there are some side effects you will experience along the way; insomnia is one of them, then the fatigue builds up with every year; join pain, lack of focus are also common I am taking Letrozole for almost 4 years, and I still have many nights with difficulty of sleeping

My oncologist prescribed Gabapentin. I’ll let y’all know if/how it works after I take it for a week or two.

Hi Paige! Gabapentin has really helped me with this exact problem. Maybe ask your medical oncologist if that is appropriate for you to try? I'm sure others have advice too as unfortunately this is a common issue.
