Should I shave remaining hair after chemo or let it grow back naturally?

Hello everyone! Currently about to start round 4 of chemo. I have lost about 50 percent of my hair due to cold cap. I have been using a head scarf and that has been working for me. But I wanted to ask, once I am done with treatment and hair begins to grow, is it recommended to shave the rest? Or should I keep my long hair while the new one on the bald spots start growing? I tried wigs but didn’t like using them. Thank you for your recommendations! 🙏

This decision about hair regrowth is such a personal choice, and there's no single right answer that works for everyone. Many people find success with either approach - some prefer starting fresh with a clean shave to allow even regrowth, while others choose to keep their remaining hair and let everything grow together naturally. Consider factors like how you feel about the current texture differences, your comfort level with the growing-out process, and what feels right for your confidence during recovery. What matters most is what makes you feel most comfortable and confident during this transition period.

I decided to own my baldness. When my hair started falling out I went to a chain hair place and had it all shaved. I have lots of outfit coordinating scarves. Take your fun where you can. Can’t help you with your real question but I have seen women who used the cold cap and are growing out their new hair - go to a salon and get a cute cut. Treat yourself 😊

I don’t have an answer for you but I do have a question. I will be starting chemo next month. I was hoping to do the cold cap. I thought it would save my hair, but looks like you still lost yours. Why did you lose your hair when using the cold cap??

My oncologist told me that even with the cold cap there was only a 40% chance of not losing some or all of your hair. So I opted out. I know another woman who used the cold cap and lost about half of her hair. Different people have different results.

Hello All My husband bought a razor for me and I used it for a while. I bought a wig but they are expensive and they itch. So I thought, screw it and I let my hair grow. Now my hair is about 2 cm long, and I'm happy with my natural hair color. Although, I got tired of my husband's remarks, every other day, and I told him to stop! Now, I'm happy with the regrowth of my hair. During my baldness I wore a thin Turban and I felt great. I live in Arkansas and it gets hot there so I had to protect my head, I never wore a cold cap. Just make the right decision for you, because you must feel comfortable. Good luck 🤞

One more thing, just like with any other medications people can experience different side effects. I'm on a treatment called Enhertu. One of the side effects is hair loss. After my Third treatment my hair fell out on certain spots. I didn't want to have a mess in my bed, to avoid that I had help from my daughter to cut and shave my hair. Once I was bald my hubby bought a very nice razor for bald people that worked great for me and I could even use it in the shower.

If you are Cold Capping, it is not recommended to shave your head. Your scalp would be dangerously exposed to the cold during the remaining sessions.

Yes, I lost about 40 % of my hair with cold cap and I am happy I still have some hair. A cap, a car or a cute hat have worked for me. Thank you all for your comments. Sending love and prayers! 🙏

Even dough with the radiation I started loosing hair and it got weak. And i didn’t have chemo.. this is so hard. I dad to cut off my hair.. I don’t know if I would had the courage to shave it all, to be honest… but if I would had to… it’s not the only one. So if you shave your head, just cover it with a turban or something… don’t worry, it’ll be growth again. I wish you get better soon.. WE ARE BRAVE, WE ARE STRONG, WE ARE SURVIVORS

I used a cold capping system and also lost 80% of hair. I had a lot to start with, so it just looks very thin. I finished chemo in May. I take biotin and horsetail capsule daily and now have approximately 2” of new growth and it’s filling in nicely. I had shoulder length hair, but cut it to chin length before I started treatment. If you didn’t know me, you wouldn’t notice the difference. I’m still happy I did cold capping as I still have hair.
