I had my mastectomy on July 3, 2025 and my oncologist put me on tamoxifen for five years. I still haven’t got my energy back. I get winded fast and very exhausting. Has anybody experienced this while taking this medication?

Many people in this community have shared similar experiences with fatigue and shortness of breath while on tamoxifen, so you're definitely not alone in feeling this way. These side effects can be challenging to manage, especially while you're still recovering from surgery, and it's worth discussing with your oncologist to see what options might help improve your energy levels and overall comfort.

Hi,I’m having my double mastectomy next week. May I ask how long were you in pain for and the healing process on going? I’m so nervous

The healing from my bi-lateral mastectomy has been quicker than I thought it would be. (I had a flat closure.) I am three weeks out and doing most everything now. My surgeon advised me to avoid major exercise except for walking for two months after surgery. I found the pain totally manageable, and was only taking acetaminophen after week one. I was honestly surprised that I felt as well as I did; I was up and walking within a day and walking around the block on day three. I haven’t had any pain meds for two weeks. Once the drains were removed at two weeks, life became more normal. The surgical tape is still in place and a tad uncomfortable, but my surgeon told me to let it fall off on its own. Follow your surgeon’s recommendations. You can do this!

I was super scared too, by the way. If you suffer from nausea, ask for zofran before surgery.

Thank you and good know your healing process. I believe having flat closure is a better healing process but that were I’m so indecisive about .I wanted to do everything at once so I requested reconstruction right after the removal but I didn’t know I would be inserted with expander which I hear is more healing and pain.

I still have radiation and the only reconstruction option for me was the back flap procedure. I am too old for that! Good luck; you can do this.

I had double mastectomy in March, and the drains stayed in 3 weeks. Too long. You feel much better and normal once drains are off. I took pain meds but not for more than a week. Get used to sleeping on your back for awhile!

@nefie F. How was your surgery? I don’t have any tips for back sleeping when you’re a side sleeper. I took my pain meds at bedtime and that helped me the most lay still on my back.

I am trying Tamoxifin now as my 3rd cancer blocker medication to try. The other 2 cause severe joint aches. I’m supposed to be on one of the drugs for 5 years. I’m pretty sure my body is sensitive to medicine. Has anyone found a cancer blocking drug with little to none side effects? I believe if your body joints hurt this bad, it can’t be good for you.
