Can't tolerate chemo side effects - is it okay to stop treatment?

Hi All, I’m a newby here. Was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2020, had chemo to shrink tumors, then surgery to remove 1/3 ascending colon, was cancer free for 4 years, just recently diagnosed with metastatic colon cancer of the lungs. The side effects of my original chemo were unpleasant but tolerable. Having NEVER been ill before, I was inept at self advocacy and still struggle with navigating medical treatment that makes the paying client work so damn hard at getting information, advice, and guidance. So now I am starting round 2 with chemotherapy and oral Braftovi. The side effects are torturous. I cannot continue. Is there anyone out there having side effects that are so severe that they are contemplating quitting treatment?

Managing severe treatment side effects is one of the most challenging aspects of cancer care, and many patients face this difficult situation where they must weigh the benefits of treatment against quality of life. Speaking with your oncology team about dose modifications, alternative treatment options, or supportive care measures might help find a path forward that feels more manageable for you. Others in this community have likely faced similar decisions and may share their experiences with finding the right balance between treatment effectiveness and tolerability.

I’ve been stage 4 since January 2023 and have been undergoing chemo treatment since. Yes, I’ve thought about giving up. Side effects are brutal and relentless. Working close with your treatment team. It took me lots of trial and error to find ways to lessen the side effects.

Stage 4 here also. I’ve been working with my doctors to adjust my pre-meds that were giving me a lot of side effects. It’s hard but definitely advocate for yourself

My cancer doctor & team are excellent at fighting this condition. However they are not really good at telling me how to live with it. My Primary Doctor is going to see me more often and work with me to tolerate side effects. She has already suggested a probiotic that has to be refrigerated. It is a relief to have someone on this side of it.

I was diagnose with colon cancer in October 2024, stage 3. I was taken off chemo due to side effects. Currently I’m on immunotherapy. No side effect. Was hoping for virotherapy but at 78 I’m too old for that. I have about a year of infusions before I know what comes nexts
