What should I expect before my first PET scan?

It's completely understandable to feel unprepared when medical facilities don't provide thorough information about what to expect during a PET scan. Many patients find it helpful to arrive well-hydrated, wear comfortable clothing without metal, and plan for the procedure to take a few hours since there's typically a waiting period after receiving the radioactive tracer before the actual scanning begins. Kudos to your mother for doing that research - having someone advocate for you and help gather information can make such a difference in feeling more prepared and confident going into medical procedures.

FYI I had an interesting experience yesterday at my PET scan. The tech has done this for 30 and was taught “old school”. When I pulled out my iPad, she suggested not using it. Watching something or playing games, stimulates the brain. That sends the glucose to your brain and your reading can be inaccurate. I have had PET scans for the last five years and was never told this at 2 different imaging centers. Listen to calming music or if you’re lucky, fall asleep.
