How Long Until an Oncologist Contacts Me After Breast Cancer Diagnosis?

I was just diagnosed with breast cancer on St. Paddy’s Day. I have a tumor in my left breast, metastatic. I’m ER positive and HER2 negative. I had an MRI done, and it hasn’t spread to any lymph nodes other than one in the left breast. I’ve been waiting to hear from the oncologist to find out my treatment plan. In the meantime, I’m very scared. How long can it take for oncologists to get in contact with a patient?

The timing for oncologist contact can vary between healthcare systems, but most aim to reach patients within a few days to a week after diagnosis, especially given the understandable urgency and anxiety that comes with a new cancer diagnosis. While waiting can feel overwhelming, this brief period often allows the medical team to review all test results thoroughly and coordinate the best possible treatment approach. Consider calling the office directly if it's been more than a week, and remember that many others in this community have walked this same uncertain path and found strength in sharing their experiences here.

Hi Karen, I was diagnosed with the same thing on my right breast. This was end of February. After a couple ultrasounds and biopsies, I had to get a genomic assay test done that scores the chance of reoccurrence before they decide treatment plan. That test takes two weeks on average. Mine took three. Just got the test back and now I know treatment plan, finally! Looks like 8 sessions of chemo starting April 10th. (They have to put in a port Before this) Then surgery, then radiation. Just want to get going right? We know it’s growing so the waiting is difficult. I wish you the smoothest journey possible.

Thanks, Michelle. That is very helpful. A friend of mine had to do chemo first and then surgery. She’s doing radiation now. I’ll keep you in my prayers on your journey!

Omg I’m in the same boat! Diagnosed in January, ep+her2-, left breast. Waiting for my lymph node biopsy results. It’s been a week and a half. I’m so frustrated with the waiting.

It depends on that reoccurrence & agressive response. Took over 2 months to get all test accomplished & seeing each of the 3 doctors. By that time my tumor increased from a 2.3 to a 2.5cm I believe They decided I should get a double masectomy even though it is stage one ILC because it could spread if it gets into my lymph nodes.

I am not accepting the fact of amputating my breasts. Asked if I would require going on those awful kisquali meds after surgery, I was told no because my cancer is not that bad.

Yikes, Suzy! I’m hoping to hear from the surgeon or oncologist soon. I think they’re waiting on my genetic blood test. Hopefully my tumor doesn’t grow while I’m waiting. Sending you lots of hugs and prayers!

Dear Karen: It is hard to accept because I respond horribly to toxins. The MRI contrast dye just about did me in. Felt like I wanted to jump out of my skin. Can not tolerate Anesthesia, gave me strokes prior surgery. The hospital here did not help at all to toward the release of the gadolinium from my system. Drank water constantly, but it Lasted over 2 months. Still do not totally feel like me. I can not even contemplate surgery without these concerns being addressed. Praying big time to being lead in the correct direction as to where to go that can accommodate my health.

Karen, hi there, I found out new years eve that my biopsies proved cancer in my right breast. I was seen immediately at Ann Barshinger Cancer Institute in Lancaster PA. February 17 I had surgery, double mastectomy as I wasn't taking a risk of getting it in left. No reconstructive surgery, but 26 lymph nodes removed in total of which 8 were diseased. So I also had lymphatic bypass surgery. I go Friday of this week to get port in chest and March 31, I start chemo. After 4 cycles of chemo I will have off a month to rest and then one month of radiation five days a week. I took am ER and PR responsive HER2 negative. I would say if concerned reach out and ask. Here Ann Barshinger seems really on it when it comes to getting you in and started . Prayers for you. You will do just fine. Corinna

Diagnosed Dec.4th, 2024 after biopsy came back as non-invasive cancer. Lumpectomy was done Feb. 26th, pathology report came back as stage 2 ductal carcinoma. 2nd surgery March 20th to remove a margin of the tumor removed in 1st surgery, also 3 lymph nodes were removed for testing. Pathology results came back yesterday saying the margin was clear, but 1 of the 3 lymph nodes had cancer cells present. Now another test is being done to test the DNA of the cancer cells to see how aggressive they are. Two weeks before I will know these results, the waiting drives me insane! I have now been referred to a medical oncologist that will determine my treatment plan. More than likely I will have chemo, radiation and hormone therapy as my cancer is fed by estrogen. I know I have a long road ahead of me, I just feel like I will never be the same again.

Do not worry you all about the 2+ weeks of waiting for results. There will be much bigger things ahead. So happy to hear from those who have good results.

Karen k prayers all goes smoothly for you now. My cancer is not genetic. Has not affected the lymph nodes. Slow growing. The only reason to do the masectomy period is because with a lumpectomy they would require removing too much in one area of the left breast. The only reason after that to remove the right breast is to make them match. Feel I really need to start over at a larger cancer facility where they have more options to offer.

Suzy, where do you live? Is there a Mayo Clinic near you? I’ve heard they are fantastic with treating cancer. After talking to a couple of people, I’m hoping my cancer hasn’t spread to the right breast. I guess the MRI can miss it. 😢

Karen K Tried getting into Mayo, but only taking cancer patients after surgery because they have more than they can handle. Surgery is my issue since they offer little options here. Did you have the contrast dye with your MRI? It has better imaging, but must be careful with that dye. I felt for 2 months that I wanted to jump out of my skin. Should heave been treated a week prior to the dye with preventative measures per an allergist I saw at Mayo. 🙏you have better care there.
