Anyone needing advice with newly diagnosed breast cancer feel free to text me and I will get back to you as soon as I can. I had a double mastectomy in June. I’m still in recovery, but the majority of the healing process is over!!!! I would like to share my experience with others and to put your mind at ease if you’re feeling overwhelmed!!!!

What a generous offer to share experience and provide support during such a vulnerable time. Connecting with someone who has walked a similar path can be incredibly valuable for newly diagnosed patients who may feel overwhelmed by the journey ahead. This kind of peer support often helps people feel less alone and more prepared for what's coming next.

I see the surgeon in a week and expect to be planning a double mastectomy for mid October. How difficult will getting in and out of bed be for an iut of shape 73 yr old? Any other advice also much appreciated!

You wanna go ahead and plan for it now Marilyn. Yeah for the first 2 1/2 to 3 weeks I slept in my recliner and I had no problem getting out of it now as far as the bed is concerned after about the third week, I did finally sleep in my bed and it was OK. I was able to get in and out of it, but if you can try to look for a recliner, it makes the process a lot easier because of the drainage tubes, you will be having, you also need some mastectomy shirt that has the pockets for the drain tubes. That was definitely a plus also you wanna try to get mastectomy pillow that protects your chest and cushions the front so in case, if you got any animals or grandkids that might accidentally come in contact with you. Also try to get a compression wrap you can find all the stuff on Amazon. You’re gonna need for sure a compression bra that clips in the front and I found those really helpful.

Are you gonna have any support when you get out of the hospital? My two daughters and my husband really was great when it came to the recovery the first week.

Wow, thank you! I have a tribute compression bra (looks like a flak jacket, lol,) and compression sleeves on order through my physio. I think we’ll rent a recliner, now that I hear how long you used one. My husband will be around and I have several friends who are retired nurses (as am I) who will be available. I was not aware of a mastectomy shirt or pillow so I’ll investigate them.

Marilyn. I got a power lift recliner off Facebook marketplace for $25. Yes $25 and it was only 2 miles from my house. Even with paying movers it was under $100 and is relieving my biggest fear (getting out of bed). This chair lifts me to a standing position so I can just walk. Knights of Columbus charitable org also loans them out including pick up and delivery for free. You might check with them or a Lions club etc to see if you can get a loaner. All the best to you. My lumpectomy and bilateral breast reduction is 10/28. And I second the suggestion to get a mastectomy pillow to keep around your chest to prevent accidental bumps and for me my animals who live to walk on my boobs.

I just found out last week that I have breast cancer and will see a surgeon Monday. I think I can handle the treatment but I am so afraid of the pain after a mastectomy. Any advice?

@Karine I’m having bilateral breast reduction and lumpectomy on 10/28. I’m taking 3 weeks before returning to work. A friend who’s been through mastectomy advised me to build in time for the emotional aspect of recovery too. All the best to you.

Thanks, Marlene! My surgery isn't scheduled yet, but I will be having a bilateral mastectomy soon, and I am more terrified than when I had open heart surgery last year. I'd love to hear your story.
