40 years old. First mammogram...IDC grade 3 right breast. So scary and don't know what to think or feel. Diagnosed 6 days ago. What should I expect when I go see the surgeon in 3 days? Any questions I should be asking right away?

Getting a cancer diagnosis is overwhelming, and it's completely natural to feel scared and uncertain right now. When meeting with the surgeon, consider asking about the treatment options available, the timeline for next steps, and what support resources are available to help navigate this journey - many others in this community have found it helpful to bring a trusted person along to take notes and ask questions too.

I would ask: pros and cons of lumpectomy vs mastectomy. Will you need chemotherapy and/or radiation? Will they do oncotype testing on the tumor or some other test (s) that tells you something about how aggressive or not the cancer is? Ask if they can connect you to others with the same cancer. It has really helped me to talk to 2 women who have gone through what i am going through. They are both still alive and well with no recurrence 11 and 12 years after diagnosis.

Update: surgeon was really nice and answered all of my questions. My oncologist appointment is set...we just need the gene test and another ultrasound done and if those come back good, start chemo! We are going to do a lumpectomy which would have the same outcome as a mastectomy. Might as well keep my parts and save some $$. Super optimistic now and happy (as 1 could be) with the way treatment is going so far.
