How do I find an oncologist after a colon cancer diagnosis?

I was diagnosed last week after a biopsy during my colonoscopy was positive. I am having an MRI today which should give me more info. My PCP is not being helpful in locating an oncologist for me and has suggested I search as well. I’m feeling anxious and overwhelmed with the whole situation. Fortunately my adult daughter is a wonderful support.

Finding the right oncologist can feel overwhelming, especially when navigating this new diagnosis. Consider reaching out to your insurance company for a list of covered oncologists in your area, contacting nearby cancer centers or hospitals with oncology departments, or asking trusted friends and family for referrals. Many cancer centers also have patient navigators who can help connect you with the right specialist and guide you through next steps.

I, too, was diagnosed last week after a biopsy during my colonoscopy was positive. I'm going for my MRI tomorrow. My gastroenterologist referred me to an oncologist. Maybe you can contact the doctor who did your colonoscopy. If your PCP is not being helpful, it sounds like you need a new one! I wish you all the best!

Thanks Sandra, sounds like we have much in common. Things are looking better. I had my MRI and was able to go online and by advocating for myself was able to connect with an oncologist. I have an appt Wed 9/3 and am hopeful. Once things settle down I will be looking for a new PCP. Sad that I needed to step out of my comfort zone by becoming aggressively assertive to advocate for myself, but I’m proud that I did.

How are you doing, Rose? How did your appointment go with the oncologist?

Way to go, Rose! It really is unfortunate your PCP wasn't more helpful and yes, it's time to find someone new once you've got your cancer team on board. Your comfort with your oncologist is very important. Make sure that feels like a fit for you!

Hi Kathleen Thanks for your encouraging words. Things are falling into place. I have a wonderful oncologist and in fact a whole team of professional, caring and knowledgeable people with whom I feel very comfortable.

Rochelle... I hope your new oncologist works out for you. I started chemo meds and radiation the other day and so far so good. I've had some fatigue but I'm hoping that will get better.
