Stage 1. They want to remove a lobe after getting results from a lung function test due to the fact that I also have COPD.

Receiving surgery recommendations along with a lung cancer diagnosis can feel overwhelming, especially when managing COPD at the same time. Many others in this community have navigated similar decisions and understand the mix of emotions that comes with treatment planning - consider sharing more details about your concerns so fellow members can offer their experiences and support.

Maybe you could be a candidate for a segmentectomy, vs removal of the entire lobe. Depending on the size and location of your tumor this might be possible. If so, you would only lose around 10% of total lung capacity vs 20% with a full lobectomy. It might be worth discussing with your doctor. I had this surgery about 7 months ago and was released from hospital the next day. I had mild COPD and my doctor was insistent on my waking 2-3 miles per day, for the month leading up to surgery. I think that was most helpful preparation. X-rays showed a drastic improvement in the COPD condition, my performance on the spirometer was greatly improved and I have had no shortness of breath issues since surgery. I’ll pray for your good outcome Teri.

I was diagnosed with stage 1 , adenocarcinoma. Had a CT, PET scan &bronchoscopy for biopsy and it was confirmed. Surgery scheduled for August 7 . Doing a rt upper lobectomy… VATS. Did well with pulmonary function test. Haven’t any lung symptoms, but these tests were done to see why I had an unexplained DVT and a few superficial blood clots 2 years ago. Never smoked a cigarette in my life, non smoking family and friends, no history of lung cancer in my family. So, I begin this journey.

Hi Teri , you're not alone:) I have emphysema and after my lung function test, I was scheduled for surgery. I had a nodule in my RUL removed, Adenocarcinoma, vats, they removed a wedge then a segment and border of my RUL plus 9 lymph nodes. My lung function studies confirmed 53% lung capacity and after surgery I am at 50%. I may be diaphragmatic breathing, but I am 98% on room air without oxygen:) Everyone's body and situation is different to them. I felt overwhelmed too at the time, everything moved so fast, you barely have time to digest your diagnosis... and 4 days I was home, no chemotherapy, no radiation. I thank Jesus. Never feel badly about reaching out...lol We have all had the similar experiences.....
