Is my CLL doctor being too dismissive about monitoring after diagnosis?

I was diagnosed with cll this past May. I’m 53 years old. The hematologist I saw acted like it was no big deal. Told me I probably wouldn’t need treatment for 15 years. He done a ct scan and some blood work and a bone marrow biopsy. He told me I had some questionable lymph nodes but after all that he told me he didn’t need to see me anymore for a year and that he didn’t need anymore blood work till then. It worries me how dismissive he was. I’ve read most people get blood work done every 3 months after diagnosis. Has this happened to anyone else?? Maybe I should look for another doctor and get a second opinion??

It's completely understandable to feel concerned about the monitoring schedule, especially when different sources suggest varying approaches. Many patients find that monitoring frequency can depend on specific factors like staging, lab values, and individual risk factors that doctors assess during diagnosis. Getting a second opinion is always a reasonable option if something doesn't feel right - it can either provide reassurance about the current plan or offer a different perspective that might better address those concerns.

It can’t hurt to get another opinion. My dr does bloodwork once a month

Agree with Joanie, although I have CMML not CLL. I’d definitely get a 2nd opinion and push for monthly CBCs if your insurance is decent.

Hi, Wayne here, diag with Cmml-2, Oct. 2024. Directly into chemo, Vizada treatments, 7 week days in a row, then a three week break, looking into Shaklee, nutritional supplements, many advances over several years

Joanie I was diagnosed Dec 23. No treatment yet as my CBCs have been stable except for platelets (mid 20s - 30s)

Tom, that’s amazing! I was diagnosed in Dec 24 and I will start Decitabine sometime in next 2 weeks. I had another bone biopsy and my blasts are at 10%, platelets at 37 and hemoglobin 9.5

Diagnosed with CLL 3 years ago. Bloodwork and followup every 6 months. Counts progressing steadily upwards, but still no major symptoms. Sounds like no benefit of treatment until symptoms develop.
