Seeking Advice: Advanced Breast Cancer Treatment Options

I was diagnosed with cancer in the left breast on 3/16/2024. It has spread to my vertebrae, lungs, and the lymph nodes in my chest. Two weeks ago, a mass appeared in my upper left abdomen. I was given the choice of an extremely dangerous surgery or hospice. My oncologist has written me off by saying that hospice is best. Does anyone have any insight about second opinions and treatment options?

Seeking a second opinion from another oncologist or comprehensive cancer center is always a reasonable option when facing difficult treatment decisions. Many patients find value in consulting with specialists who may have different perspectives or access to clinical trials and newer treatment approaches. Consider reaching out to major cancer centers in your area or asking for referrals to medical oncologists who specialize in advanced breast cancer - they may be able to discuss additional options or provide clarity about your current situation.

That right don’t give up. I would see if there is another treatment they are able to try. If not I would get a second opinion. Think positive.

I agree with Sherry and Joan here- absolutely get another opinion. Do you have a cancer research facility near you to tap into? A major hospital or university setting may have more resources/ expertise/ services you can help you seek better answers. That your cancer has spread indicates your protocol isn’t working. Guess what? There’s more than one way to fight this crap.

Hi Tammy! I’m sort of in the same spot you are except I started with metastatic breast cancer in 2018 and then in 2023 they found cancer in my T3, T4 and in three of my ribs and in 2025 it has showed up in my pelvic bone. My Oncologist and Family Dr want me to start talking to hospice to learn what my options will be in the future. They have ordered a PET Scan for April 10 but why have one when they have given up on treatment options? I’ve wondered if I should look for a second opinion too.

Yes! Always get a second opinion. I did. Right now I'm getting standard treatment agreed by both so I feel good about that. CAT scan coming soon. Fingers crossed. I have metastatic TN BC.

Tammy & Cheryl, when I was diagnosed with mBC in 2016, it was in my bones. Too many to count, all but 1 rib, clavicle, spine, shoulders, upper arms, hips and legs. Basically not below my elbows or knees. Nine years later, all are no longer lighting up on scans. I have been on CDK4/6 and Aromatase inhibitors. My last scan did show a new bone lesions in one of my ribs and some in my liver. So I've switched to chemo. I have had some rough days. But, I have had way more great days. I am proud to say I've made special memories with family and dear friends who will remember me. Please find an oncologist that can give you hope. The first oncologist I saw gave me a prescription for oxycodone for a pain level of 2 because "I was going to need it ". I haven't needed it. You have a life to live, please don't let the doc discourage you. God bless you. Ginny

Yep every time I see my oncologist he asks if I need more pain meds. I too have not really needed them yet but kind of expect I’ll need them down the road. I have a lot to live for, my two daughters and 4 Grand Babies 20, 13, 6 and 4 this year and I want as much time as I can get with them. One day at at time and one special moment at a time. Prayers out to everyone of you and a hug too.

Has anyone mentioned consulting with an Integrative Oncologist to add treatments in conjunction with traditional treatment? Getting a second opinion with a traditional oncologist will likely yield similar results. You may find a better connection with a different team or a new clinical study but the standards of care for mBC are limited. Stay strong! 🙏🏻

I'm 2 1/2 years in with inflammatory breast cancer that has spread. I'm on kisquali, it's working, but rough. Can someone please tell me: what should I expect from my oncologist? She never says anything except, no new cancer. All's fine. Then why am I so sick. Because of treatment. I'm so discouraged, I feel like I'm going to die. But reading your posts, maybe I'm wrong.

Deborah, what you should expect from your oncologist is to treat you as a patient, not a number on a report. Your oncologist should listen to you and offer palliative care options to alleviate side effects. If this doesn’t describe your appointments it is likely time to either speak up and get answers or to find a different better practice to suit your needs.

Deborah, I was on Kisqali and had lots of side effects. My oncologist treated me for the side effects. But I had dis-ease progression in less than a year.

I agree with all, get a second opinion. Remember you must be your own self advocate with your health, battling BC. Always do what sounds right for you. You got this!

Hi Tammy, you should get a second opinion! I had a surgeon who wanted to give me a colostomy and I went to a different surgeon and he said as long as I have a BM regular I do t need it . I was diagnosed originally in 2011 now again in 2023. I still don’t have the colostomy bag. Please get another opinion. God bless you 🙏🏻🙏🏻💕
