What's it like starting second-line treatment for HER2+ breast cancer?

I have HER2-positive, hormone-positive metastatic breast cancer and my oncologist is discussing second-line treatment options with me. We're looking at chemotherapy and HER2-targeted therapy combinations. One approach includes bone therapy to help manage bone metastases if present, and the other doesn't. My doctor will help decide which is best based on whether I have bone involvement and my overall health. I'd love to connect with others who have a similar diagnosis and have been through second-line treatments. • What was your experience with second-line treatment combinations for HER2-positive breast cancer? • If you had bone therapy as part of your treatment, what was that like for you day to day?

Hi April. I am on Xgeva. I'm lucky that I have not had any major side effects from the monthly injections-other than some light bone pain the week or so afterwards. Some people get a burning sensation at the injection site but I do not. My bone metastases is still progressing but at a slow rate so far.

Starting second-line treatment can feel overwhelming, and reaching out to connect with others who understand this journey shows real strength. Many community members have shared valuable insights about their experiences with HER2-targeted therapy combinations and bone treatments, including how they managed day-to-day life during treatment. This is such an important conversation, and hopefully others in the community will share their experiences to help you feel more prepared and supported as you move forward with your treatment plan.
