Why Can't I Get Mammograms with Metastatic Breast Cancer?

I have Metastatic Breast Cancer with Mets to my mediastinal area. Because I am metastatic, I can no longer get mammograms (diagnostic) . This makes absolutely no sense to me whatsoever because I have ILC, and ILC is most often found through imaging, whether it be mammograms, ultrasound, or MRI. Is this protocol? Certainly, my cancer could recur in the same breast or the contralateral breast, and if it doesn’t form a lump, how do I know without regular imaging? Thank you for any insight you can provide

This is such a valid concern, and it's understandable to feel confused about changes in screening protocols after a metastatic diagnosis. Many people in similar situations have found it helpful to have detailed conversations with their oncology team about surveillance strategies, especially given the unique characteristics of different cancer types. Consider asking your medical team about alternative imaging options or modified screening approaches that might work within your treatment plan - they may have specific reasons for current recommendations that could be better explained, or there might be other monitoring methods available.

Did they say why you can't get mammograms anymore?

I have IDC mBC, and was diagnosed denovo which means my primary tumor is still in place in my R breast. So it’s a different situation from yours. However, my oncologist is having me continue with yearly Mammograms and ultrasounds. She said that for breast tissue it’s more precise imaging than the CT scans & bone scans that I get.

Kate- me too. I have tumor in R breast, R lymph, liver and bone mets. So the drs won't do anything to surgically remove your breast tumor or do any radiation or chemo on ur breast tumor either, right? they told me that none of these things are an option for me as a first line treatment because I am metastatic. I'm currently just taking oral immunotherapy ( letrozole kisqali) and monthly ovarian suppression injections (zolodex). I keep reading messages on these boards where people seem to be saying the opposite and I'm starting to wonder if i should be advocating for a more aggressive approach...
