How do you cope with depression and anxiety after finishing radiation treatment?

I recently completed 8 weeks of radiation treatment. I had my prostate removed 19 years ago, and had undetectable PSA until recently. I had few to no issues with the treatment. Now that I’m done, I am experiencing both physical and emotional pain. I can’t explain why I feel depressed, slightly weak and an overall feeling of nervousness. Has anyone else experienced these feelings? I’m trying my best to “get myself together,” but thus far can’t get myself out of this funk.

What you're experiencing after completing radiation treatment is more common than many realize, and these feelings are a valid part of the recovery process. The combination of physical and emotional changes following cancer treatment can be overwhelming, even when the treatment itself went smoothly. Many people in this community have shared similar experiences with post-treatment depression and anxiety, so you're definitely not alone in this journey. Consider reaching out to your healthcare team about these symptoms, as they can provide guidance on managing both the physical and emotional aspects of your recovery.

From experience, your feelings are common after battling cancer twice now. Even as a first timer like myself, those feelings are normal. For me, it's about how to best manage those feelings. Sometimes you feel alone because family and friends that haven't gone through it can't relate or don't know how to behave around you. But support is super important. So I educated my family and friends as best possible and also sought outside professional help. No shame in that at all. Most healthcare cancer treatment providers have such programs. Also, I concentrate on "me" more now than before and before others. Not to sound selfish, but I have taken care all around me my entire adult life...now it's about me, my longevity, and enjoying whatever life God blesses me with. Hit the gym or other exercises and eat as healthy as possible without depriving yourself of life's pleasures. Wishing you health and happiness Frank.
