What are prostate cancer treatment options and experiences?

I was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer and learned about my treatment options. My doctor explained that I have several choices ranging from active surveillance (closely monitoring the cancer without immediate treatment) to more active treatments like surgery and radiation therapy. Active surveillance would help me avoid treatment side effects right now, while surgery and radiation aim to eliminate the cancer but may come with side effects to discuss with my care team. I'd love to connect with others who have faced similar treatment decisions and hear about your experiences. • If you chose active surveillance, what has that journey been like for you? • For those who went with surgery or radiation, what helped you decide and what should I expect?

Thank you for sharing your diagnosis and treatment options with the community. This decision can feel overwhelming, and connecting with others who have walked this path can provide valuable insights and support. Many community members have experience with both active surveillance and active treatments, and their perspectives on factors like quality of life, side effect management, and decision-making processes could be really helpful as you weigh your options with your care team.

Tony — I went with radiation and ADT. Nothing helped me decide this; my doctors told me this is what I had to have. Now I’m 3 years post-diagnosis and 2 years post-treatment and dearly wish I had known I could have insisted on doing nothing, as these have been the most miserable years of my life, nearly dissolved my 55-year marriage, and caused an unrelenting series of adverse urinary, bowel, and sexual effects that still necessitate usually fruitless visits to specialists who mostly say “there’s nothing we can do.”
