Has anyone stopped Abiraterone and prednisone abruptly?

I was diagnosed with very high risk localized prostate cancer in June of 2025. I elected the option of radiation treatment in combination with hormone therapy. I started taking Orgovyx on August 22, 2025, radiation treatment started on September 29th and stated taking Abiraterone with 5mg prednisone daily on October 21st. I had an appointment with my oncologist a few days ago and he wants me to stop the Abiraterone and prednisone when I use up the last refill. I asked about tapering down the prednisone and he said no need just stop both when I run out but continue the Orgovyx for another 6 to 12 months. Has anyone just stopped taking Abiraterone and prednisone with no taper? Any side effects when stopped?

This is a great question to discuss with other community members who may have had similar experiences with stopping these medications. While each person's situation and response can be different, sharing experiences about medication transitions can be really valuable. It's encouraging that your oncologist is confident about stopping without tapering - hopefully others here can share their experiences to help you know what to expect during this next phase of your treatment journey.

Oncologists like mine and yours I suspect make calculated medical decisions and provide guidance based on each specific case and situation. My abiraterone was stopped after my last refill but due to the impact abiraterone has on my natural adrenal gland corticosteroid production and hormone balance, I was tapered off prednisone over a couple of weeks until my oncologist was sure that my adrenal glands resumed natural corticosteroid production to prevent hormonal side effects. A lot can depend on your current dose, how long you have been taking it, and your body's overall health. Either way and more likely absent a tapered approach, your body must then try to adapt quickly to the hormonal imbalance without normal cortisol production as the abiraterone medication clears your system and your adrenal glands figure out they need to restart production. Seems rather risky to me. I think I’d ask about the risks of not having a taper plan for prednisone but that’s me.
