How long does catheter discomfort last after prostate surgery?

I had a Robotic Assisted Radical Prostatectomy last week on Oct 31st. Have an indwelling catheter. One incision of about 1.5 inches and it is below my belly button. I am 70 yrs old and in good physical shape. My Gleason score was 4+3=7. Cancer was contained in the prostate. My belly is a bit swollen but the catheter is the most annoying thing I am dealing with at this time. I am managing slight discomfort with Tylenol and Ibuprofen. Hope to have catheter removed this Friday.

Catheter discomfort after prostate surgery typically lasts until removal, which usually happens within 1-2 weeks post-surgery. Managing the discomfort with appropriate pain relief while waiting for removal is common, and many patients find significant relief once the catheter comes out - hopefully Friday brings that relief and marks another step forward in recovery.

I just had my cath removed and the relief was incredible. I can move around without pain or irritation. No more worrying about accidentally pulling it out.

Paul, recovery from prostate surgery is a journey. Catheter removal is a big milestone so all the best to getting through it. For me it actually was not that uncomfortable, and the feeling of regained freedom was very welcome. I’m sure you will feel the same. Just keep going. I’m 11 months post surgery and while it does take time, the milestones get easier - the body has a wonderful way of healing itself with help from you and your doctor. Best wishes.

Your past the worst of it!! If you made it out of surgery with no complications and you get clear margins you are on promising road ahead! I know 2 people that went through surgery 3 months ago and are home free with catheter biggest pain to deal with post surgery. You will be great! Stay positive and you'll look back and realize it was a blip in the journey and come out 100% cured. 🙏

Paul, I hope you are doing well in your recovery. I just had RALP on Monday, Nov. 10. No complications so far, at home on the third day. Catheter is an annoyance but not awful. Dr. O’Neill and the folks at the Huntsman Cancer Hospital in Salt Lake City have been great to work with. Taking it easy and hoping for full recovery. — Details: 65 Diagnosed in April, no symptoms but family history and a PSA went from 3.3 to 6.81. MRI showed small lesion Biopsy confirmed cancer Gleason 3+4=7 Decipher genomic score .52 Looked at all the options. Decided on surgery.

You are following the same path as me. I had a Robotic Assisted Radical Prostatectomy 10 days ago and glad I did.

Wow—just one incision? I’ve heard of that. I have one in the same place, but 5 across my abdomen above the navel. None too painful at the moment but I’m still on pain meds.

After my surgery and before I started ADT and radiation I went to PT to learn about kegel exercises. It’s not just for the girls! It helped immensely and I have no incontinence. Just a though
