How do you cope with renal cancer after beating testicular cancer?

Hi Ya’ll, I was diagnosed with renal cancer after a preventative CT in August of 2025 that I have done every 6-8 months since having testicular cancer in 2021 that was treated with chemo and surgery. January 5th of 2026 I had a radical open nephrectomy. The pathology report came back positive for clear cell renal cell carcinoma. I meet with my oncologist in two days to discuss treatment options. My surgeon did mention that I may need immunotherapy. So I guess we’ll see. I pray that everything turns out ok.

Facing a second cancer diagnosis brings unique challenges, and it's completely natural to feel uncertain about what lies ahead. Many in this community have found that connecting with others who understand both the medical journey and the emotional aspects can be incredibly valuable during treatment planning and recovery. The preventative monitoring that led to this early detection shows great self-advocacy, and meeting with the oncologist will provide important clarity about the path forward.

I had a right radical nephrectomy 2 years ago with a high chance of being cured. I found out last August that it had returned and is now in my lungs. My tumors are small and not growing so have not yet started any treatment other than regular scans to monitor them. I have been told by my oncologist that holding off treatment until they are larger makes the best sense in my case. During my first go around I had Stage 1b and did not have adjuvant treatment. When it returned I got down on myself for not doing it but was assured by my oncologist that research has shown that the addition of the adjuvant treatment has not been shown to have any advantage over just surgery.

Hey Ron, Similar situation, just more time in between. I had Testicular Cancer back in 2010, had surgery, chemo and an RPLND. Fast forward to last June and find a 9cm tumor that ended up being Papillary RCC. I was stage 2, but grade 4 because of some rhabdoid and sarcomatoid features. I’ve had 9 of 17 Keytruda treatments so far with minimal side effects. Did you end up doing any type of treatment or immunotherapy for yours? What stage or grade were you? You’re the first person I’ve encountered that also had TC and now RCC.
